Wildlife Engagement 2023

Wildlife protection is our passion! Since 2008, we have been committed to wildlife conservation through both research and practical application. In 2023, we were once again active and involved in many areas. Here we present examples of our work.

Wildlife and Fawn Rescue

We rescue fawns from the Allgäu region to the Baltic Sea coast. Our teams are active at our locations in Northern and Southern Germany, flying over several thousand hectares each year to protect wildlife.

In Greifswald, students and other volunteers also support us, with whom we are successfully deployed every year.

Protection of the Montagu’s Harrier in Brandenburg

Since 2019, we have been supporting Simone and Ronny Müller, as well as other volunteers from the Working Group of Berlin-Brandenburg Ornithologists, in the protection of Montagu’s Harriers. Every year, we travel to the Oder Valley east of Berlin and spend one to two very long days “hunting” for nests and breeding pairs.

This year, we were able to hand over a drone and provide intensive training to Simone and Ronny on its application for one day. On that day alone, we found over 15 nests and returned home overjoyed. In the following days, many more nests were identified. By the end of the season, there were over 30 nests, more than ever before.

POIStudio and our app help the volunteers to disturb as little as possible when setting up the protective fence and searching for nests, and to use their valuable time as efficiently as possible.

Internationally Active for Wildlife Conservation

We are internationally engaged, for example, together with the organization Biodiversity Inventory for Conservation (BINCO) and the WWF, for the protection of the Hog Deer in Cambodia.

The Hog Deer is an endemic and almost extinct small deer that lives in the agricultural areas of Cambodia.

Following the initial attempts last year, BINCO this year flew over and analyzed many thousands of hectares with a thermal imaging drone and our POIStudio software. Numerous Hog Deer were found, laying the foundation for their protection.

We support the project through consultation, provision of software (POIStudio), and assistance with data analysis. Training and utilizing our Artificial Intelligence for the automatic detection of the animals is the next step in the project.

Last year, we published a scientific paper with BINCO, and the next one is in progress.
