Software Developer (m/f/d)
Home office, Germany-wide · Full-time or part-time
With a growing team, we are committed to protecting wildlife and saving lives. Positive impact through technology and innovation is in our DNA. thermal DRONES was founded in 2020 and is a spin-off from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) based in Greifswald. We have offices in Greifswald and Fahrenzhausen in southern Germany. In recent years, we have become a technology leader—now we are looking for the person who will further develop our software at this level.
Your tasks
We already have a dedicated development team for our cloud and app products. You'll be joining us alongside them—with a clear focus on POIStudio, and the freedom to help build new projects from the ground up.
- POIStudio. Our desktop application for drone image analysis: Python with a Qt interface, packaging and delivery included. You develop it further — from functionality to the finished version for the user.
- New projects. New application areas are constantly being added. You start with a blank page and help decide how the whole thing is structured.
- AI Development. Help us further develop our AI systems.
- Process optimization. We are also very innovative in our internal processes.
- The environment — according to interest and need: our QGIS plugin, smaller tools, evaluation pipelines.
What we are working with is the existing inventory, not the requirements list:
- Python, including Qt for the desktop interfaces
- FastAPI for our backend services and interfaces
- Ruby on Rails 8 on Ruby 3.4 for our cloud platform
- Vue and TypeScript with Vite in the frontend
- QGIS plugin development
- Android with the DJI SDK on the device side
- Docker, MySQL, Redis, MQTT
You don't need to know all of this. We're looking for someone who can learn existing code, cleanly connect systems, and prefers to finish one thing rather than start three. If you're solid in one language and curious about the rest, that's a good fit.
This is what you bring with you
- Solid practical experience in software development — whether from training, studies, agency work or own projects.
- The ability to read through unfamiliar, organically grown code without wanting to rewrite it immediately.
- Independence. You work mostly remotely, there is no daily task allocation – you recognize for yourself what is important.
- German for coordination within the team and with clients.
- We appreciate a personal connection to our topics (wildlife rescue, drones, nature, emergency services).
What you have with us
- Work whose impact you can count. At the end of the season, there's a number of rescued animals, and your software is part of that.
- Working from home. We like to save ourselves unnecessary travel time.
- You manage your hours completely on your own. Completely. No core hours, no attendance list.
- Full-time or part-time — the scope is negotiable.
- Very flat hierarchy. You speak directly with the people who make decisions, and usually also directly with the users.
- Diverse tasks. Desktop, web, interfaces, geodata, devices. New application areas are constantly being added.
- The position will be tailored to your needs. If your focus is on backend and interfaces, then that's what it will be. If it's on user interfaces, then that's what it will be too.
- A team that's fun to work with — and colleagues who know the same topic from their own experience.
Terms
- Home office, nationwide in Germany; meetings at the Greifswald or Fahrenzhausen location by arrangement.
- Full-time or part-time, hours to be agreed upon
- Compensation: To be agreed upon
- Start: We'd be happy to start immediately.
Application
Please do not send a cover letter. Instead, write us an informal email to info@thermaldrones.de and answer three questions:
- What do you currently do for a living?
- What is your personal connection to wildlife conservation or the world of emergency services?
- What would you tackle first at our company?
A resume is sufficient as an attachment. If you have something to show—a repository, a personal project, a piece of code—include it. It doesn't need to be neatly organized.
