DJI Matrice 5 Series: thermal imaging at 1280 × 1024 pixels

The DJI Matrice 5 Series brings thermal imaging at 1280 × 1024 pixels, three 50 MP cameras, a laser rangefinder up to 3 km and onboard AI detection. The DJI Matrice 5TD is the drone of the DJI Dock 4. Here you can see what defines the series, how the 5TD works and what it is good for.

The series

What makes the Matrice 5 Series special

Camera and functions of the Matrice 5 Series at a glance.

  • Thermal imaging

    Thermal imaging at 1280 × 1024 pixels

Native 1280 × 1024 pixels at an 8 µm pixel pitch and 30 Hz, up to 2560 × 2048 in video through super resolution. The field of view is 45° diagonal. That is four times as many pixels as the thermal image of the Matrice 4 Series.

  • Temperature

Temperature measurement in the thermal image

The measuring range runs from −40 to 150 °C (high gain) and from 0 to 550 °C (low gain), with an accuracy of ±2 °C or ±2 %. Visible-thermal fusion and several colour palettes are included.

  • Camera

    Three 50 MP cameras

Wide-angle (23.5 mm), medium telephoto (70 mm, 3×) and telephoto (252 mm, 11×), each with 50 megapixels and photos up to 8192 × 6144. 4K video at 30 frames per second. Night mode goes up to ISO 1,638,400, and an NIR fill light helps in the dark.

  • Zoom

    176× hybrid zoom

From the overview to the detail in one camera: the telephoto camera zooms 16× digitally, the thermal image up to 32×.

  • Measuring

Laser rangefinder up to 3 km

Up to 3,000 m at perpendicular incidence and 25 % reflectivity, 1,200 m at oblique incidence. The error is below 0.3 m up to 100 m. Distance and coordinates of the aimed point appear right in the live view.

  • AI

    Onboard AI detection

DJI's AI recognises 17 object types in the live view.

  • Safety

    Obstacle sensing and parachute

Vision, rotating LiDAR (110 m), downward 3D infrared and mmWave radar detect obstacles all around. The AP1 parachute deploys in 600 ms, with a descent rate below 6 m/s.

  • Software

    FlightHub 2 and Cloud API

The series is operated via DJI FlightHub 2 with an AI-assisted workflow and the DJI Enterprise app. The DJI Cloud API connects it to your own systems.

  • POICloud

    Connection to the POICloud

The integration of the Matrice 5 Series into the POICloud is prepared. How the Dock 4 connects to cloud platforms from other providers is explained in the article The new DJI Dock 4.

Dock

DJI Dock 4: the station for the Matrice 5TD

The Dock 4 is DJI's first dock that swaps the drone's battery by itself. A swap takes under 25 seconds, and under 45 seconds pass from landing to the next take-off. The drone takes off automatically as soon as the cover opens and transmits the live image immediately. The dock operates from −40 to 50 °C (IP56) and pre-heats the batteries in the cold. It is controlled from the cloud, no remote controller is needed.

The Dock 4 Combo includes the Dock 4, a Matrice 5TD, the DJI O4 Ground Station, the AP1 parachute and four batteries. All technical data of the dock is on the page DJI Dock: Drone in a Box. DJI does not publish a price, and sales go through enterprise dealers. We will make you an individual offer.

Applications

What the Matrice 5TD with the Dock 4 is good for

Our assessment on a scale of 1 to 5. Almost always one question decides: does the mission repeat in the same place, so that a dock can stand there?

  • Site protection and infrastructure: 5 of 5

Fixed site, alarm-triggered launches, thermal imaging at night and equipment designed for flights beyond visual line of sight: this is where the dock drone plays to its strengths.

DJI Dock: Drone in a Box
  • Fire service and rescue: 4 of 5

Very fast response from the station or site, strong thermal data. Limits are the 10 km radius, the permit situation and the question of where the dock goes.

Drones for fire departments and rescue services
  • Photovoltaic thermography: 4 of 5

High native resolution and regular flights go well together, which pays off for large solar parks with a fixed dock location.

  • Breeding bird protection in fixed areas: 3 of 5

Recurring monitoring flights over the same areas are conceivable. The area, nature conservation requirements and dock placement have to fit together.

Bird and species conservation using drones
  • Fawn rescue across fields: 2 of 5

The image quality is convincing, but missions move from meadow to meadow. Without a remote controller and without a mobile dock the flexibility is missing; a portable drone is the better choice here.

  • Surveying and mapping: 2 of 5

Good 50 MP cameras, but the 5TD is designed for thermal imaging and security tasks, not for mapping.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about the DJI Matrice 5 Series

Which drone flies with the DJI Dock 4?

The DJI Matrice 5TD. The Dock 4 is compatible only with it.

Can I fly the Matrice 5TD without a dock?

Not normally. DJI intends the 5TD for operation with the Dock 4, and a limited emergency mode with the DJI RC Plus 2 has been announced. If you want to fly mobile, the DJI Matrice 4T or the DJI Matrice 4TD suits you better.

What is the difference between the Matrice 5TD and the Matrice 4TD?

The 5TD has thermal imaging at 1280 × 1024 instead of 640 × 512 pixels, a 3 km instead of 1.8 km laser range and built-in safety technology, but it is tied to the Dock 4. The 4TD flies from the Dock 3 or by hand.

How accurate is the laser rangefinder?

The systematic error is below 0.1 m up to 12 m, below 0.3 m from 12 to 100 m and below 1 m from 100 to 3,000 m. The 3,000 m range applies at perpendicular incidence and 25 % reflectivity; at oblique incidence it is 1,200 m.

What accessories are available for the Matrice 5TD?

The AL2D spotlight, the AS2D speaker and a bracket with three attachment points. With the spotlight on, visual obstacle sensing is off; LiDAR and radar stay active.

Is the Matrice 5TD suitable for fawn rescue?

For fawn rescue across fields, rather not: missions change from meadow to meadow, and a dock stays in one place. A portable thermal imaging drone remains the obvious choice there.

How much does the Matrice 5TD cost?

DJI does not publish a price, and sales go through enterprise dealers. We will make you an individual offer.
