Career at thermal DRONES

Every spring in Germany, fawns are killed by mowing machines because they bury themselves in the grass instead of running away when danger threatens. And every year, thousands of people stand in a field at four in the morning, searching for them with a thermal imaging drone before the tractor arrives. We develop the technology that makes this possible—drones, navigation systems, software, and training. The same technology helps in the search for missing persons, in locating smoldering embers after a fire, and in protecting ground-nesting birds.

thermal DRONES has been around since 2008, emerging from the German Aerospace Center (DLR). We are headquartered in Greifswald and have three other locations in Germany.

We are growing, and new applications are constantly emerging. That's why we are currently looking for two people—one for marketing and one for software development, who can also work from home.

Positions we are currently filling

Marketing (m/f/d)

Experienced marketing professional with a broad range of expertise: content, social media, website, newsletters, trade fairs, trade press — and on-site video. You will strengthen an existing team.

  • Location: Home office, nationwide in Germany
  • Scope: Full-time or part-time

Software Developer (m/f/d)

Developer for the full range: POIStudio in Python and Qt, QGIS plugin, analysis pipelines, web with FastAPI, Rails and Vue — and new projects from scratch. You will strengthen our team.

  • Location: Home office, nationwide in Germany
  • Scope: Full-time or part-time

What you can expect from us

  • Work that visibly makes a difference. Every additional effort means animals survive the morning. This isn't just a story, it's the calculation behind it.
  • You manage your hours completely yourself. Completely. During fawn season, we're busy from four in the morning, but not so much in November — the work schedule is based on that, not on core hours.
  • Full-time or part-time, the scope is negotiable and not a disqualifying factor.
  • A team that's fun to work with. Small enough that everyone knows everyone else.
  • Very flat hierarchy. Short communication channels, quick decisions, no approval loops.
  • Diverse tasks. What is fawn rescue today is breeding bird protection, surveying, or a fire brigade operation tomorrow.
  • The position will be tailored to you, depending on your strengths. We don't have a job description that restricts you.

A condition that we take seriously.

Both positions require a personal connection to wildlife conservation or the world of emergency services. You've been out in the fields before sunrise, you hunt, you're active in nature conservation, or you wear a pager for the fire department, ambulance service, THW (Federal Agency for Technical Relief), or DLRG (German Life Saving Association). The reason is simple: Anyone who only knows the difference between a meadow and an emergency call by hearsay is less effective for our clients—both when writing about them and when building the software they operate with numb fingers at 4:30 a.m.

Application

Please do not send a cover letter. Instead, write us an informal email to info@thermaldrones.de and answer three questions:

  1. What do you currently do for a living?
  2. What is your personal connection to wildlife conservation or the world of emergency services?
  3. What would you tackle first at our company?

A CV is sufficient as an attachment. Work samples speak louder than any certificate—feel free to include them.
