The new drones in the Matrice series – for example, the Matrice 4T or the Matrice 4TD – come standard with an RTK module. The drone communicates with this module via an internet service (SAPOS) and receives precise positioning correction data. This makes it possible to carry out highly accurate surveying tasks or to place markers with a deviation of only a few centimeters. This technology is also increasingly being used in fawn rescue and breeding bird protection.

RTK in fawn rescue
Within fawn rescue operations, the RTK function plays a crucial role, especially in locating and securing the fawns, because even modern smartphones with built-in GPS only achieve an accuracy of one meter or more. If the coordinates are then transmitted, this inaccuracy can lead to the location being off by precisely this amount. With modern drones equipped with a laser rangefinder, this risk is significantly reduced, as it allows for precise measurements and marking down to the centimeter. Combined with RTK, this results in maximum precision.
We ourselves use the RTK receiver for navigation with our POI app on every fawn rescue mission, ensuring we can reach the locations as accurately as possible.

RTK in breeding bird protection
Due to the small size of nests and clutches, highly accurate location tracking is essential for breeding bird conservation. Even a few centimeters of deviation when measuring clutch locations can result in nests being overlooked or even damaged. This is where the strengths of our RTK receiver come into play, because thanks to its low accuracy, approaching and checking nests and clutches can be done safely. Here, too, the POIApp, in combination with the POIApp RTK receiver, guides users to the selected location with the highest precision.
For several years now, we have been collaborating with various associations and organizations in the field of breeding bird conservation, and whether it's wading birds, partridges, or skylarks – our RTK receiver has proven its worth everywhere and is ideally suited for all applications.
Seamless integration with POIApp on Android and iOS
We are delighted to announce that, in addition to our software, we are now producing our first in-house hardware, which integrates seamlessly into our existing software ecosystem. While until recently an additional third-party app was required to use the RTK receiver with a smartphone, the release of the new POIApp version allows for direct integration of the receiver and all the data it outputs. This provides users with all the necessary information about deviation, altitude, and coordinates directly at their fingertips, resulting in a more cohesive user experience.
Thanks to Bluetooth and Bluetooth LE (Low Energy), the device can be used with both Android smartphones and iPhones running iOS. This was not the case with previous versions. Now, all our customers benefit from maximum precision, regardless of the operating system. In both cases, various settings and customization options are available within the POIApp in conjunction with the receiver, ensuring the device is optimally adapted to individual use cases.
Precision in a pocket-sized format
What truly sets our RTK receiver apart, besides its remarkable accuracy, is its conveniently small form factor. Thanks to its compact size, the device fits easily into any trouser pocket or field kit without being cumbersome due to its weight. The integrated clip and additional carabiner also allow for attachment to various bags, backpacks, and similar items.
With over 5 hours of battery life, the receiver easily lasts even during extended deployments. Afterward, it can be recharged using any standard USB-C cable with a minimum of 10 watts.
The color is also typical of thermalDRONES: orange. This ensures that the receiver is easily identifiable and won't get lost.
Handmade production
Currently, we manufacture each RTK receiver individually by hand. This is naturally time-consuming, and orders may therefore take a little longer. However, this allows us to ensure that every device functions flawlessly and provides you with the best possible support during your operations.
