Fawn Rescue Mangfalltal: Wildlife rescue in Bavaria with thermal imaging drone and POISuite

Thanks to the dedicated team and the collaboration with thermal DRONES, significantly more fawns, field hares and ground breeders could be rescued in the Mangfall Valley.
The guys from thermal DRONES and their products and their service are just great. We mainly use the POISuite for fawn rescue and only with this solution can we handle the number of areas and the flood of inquiries. With POICloud and POIStudio you simply save more fawns than with any other method/solution.

In 2020, the association was founded by 7 people. What initially began as an association of a few hunters, animal rights activists and nature enthusiasts, has developed into an organization that now comprises over 70 voluntary members. The dedicated fawn rescuers are active throughout the district in the Mangfalltal in Upper Bavaria.
As in many wildlife rescue organizations, the number of inquiries and the area searched before mowing increases every year. While in the first year, 2020, 15 fawns were found, the number of rescued fawns in the following year was already 89. In 2025, wild animals were rescued with drones on over 500 meadows with a total area of 3,150 ha during meadow mowing.

The challenge
The association relied on a digital solution early on for the growing number of order requests. At the beginning of 2025, the association suddenly faced a major challenge. The previous reporting solution was no longer usable and at the same time there was a huge increase in inquiries and the area to be searched.
Shortly before the start of the season, an alternative had to be found that could handle field registration, team coordination, order management and scheduling for a total of 7 drones and make the processes as uncomplicated as possible.
The association was able to build on many years of experience with fawn searching using georeferencing methods and had precise ideas about what suitable software for fawn rescue should look like.

By switching to POISuite, the association was able to map all the steps necessary for the successful processing of their operations in one software solution. At the same time, all drones, smartphones and mission laptops were networked via a cloud solution and information was exchanged in real time without any additional effort.
How does the association use POISuite for fawn rescue?
Record inquiries and assign orders
The order requests are recorded centrally via the website in the POICloud and the time and location of the mowing as well as the exact area are already recorded in the request. Accepted orders are assigned to one of the 7 drone teams in the cloud.
Flight route planning, flight and wildlife detection
The operational teams are coordinated via the POIApp and guided to the operational site. Depending on the team, a DJI Enterprise Mavic 3T or a Matrice 4T thermal imaging drone is used. The flight route required for the respective drone model, including precise terrain flight, is created fully automatically by the POICloud and transmitted to the remote control.
After the fully automatic flight over the area with an area coverage of 1 ha/min, the recorded data is evaluated with the POIStudio software and the locations are transmitted in real time to the smartphones of the helper teams.
While the thermal imaging drone is already searching the next areas, the helpers navigate to the locations with the POIApp to secure the fawns, field hares and nests. All team members see in real time where the other helpers are and which locations are already being processed.
Documentation of finds and secured animals
The animal species found is recorded in the POIApp for evaluation and documentation. The wild animals secured in boxes can be recorded in the app with the position and duration of the confinement. This ensures that all animals are returned to freedom, even with numerous boxes at different locations.
Share information with everyone involved in real time
In addition, the POICloud informs everyone involved in real time about the status of the area to be searched and the finds and thus helps with the release of the mowing and the identification of support needs between the individual teams.
The result
With the support of thermal DRONES, everything necessary could be implemented before the start of the 2025 season. The number of farmers, hunters and districts for which orders were carried out more than doubled in 2025 compared to the previous year:
The increase would not have been manageable without the switch to POISuite and the order request via online form by the farmers/hunters themselves. The automatic route generation from POICloud in particular saved us an incredible amount of time.
The combination of POICloud + M3T/M4T + POIStudio + POIApp allows us to achieve the maximum area coverage with a relatively small team. Without the POISuite, we would have been able to search significantly fewer areas and save fewer fawns.
